A $360 marine collagen powder is the jumping-off point, but the episode is not a straightforward debunk. Your body already makes around three grams of collagen a day — more than most supplement servings contain — and swallowed protein does not get routed to your face. So the question becomes what people who genuinely improve on collagen are actually responding to.

Dr. Lin's answer has three parts. Some specific peptide sequences, at specific sizes, do appear to survive digestion and signal fibroblasts — which is why the clinical studies use precisely engineered peptides rather than generic hydrolysed powder. A label that doesn't specify which peptides and at what concentration is selling you expensive protein powder. Useful range is about 2.5–15 g daily; beyond that, eat protein.
  • The cofactor doses are lower than the supplement aisle implies. Vitamin C at 75–110 mg daily is what the research supports for collagen synthesis, not 1,000 mg. Zinc at around 9 mg significantly raises P1NP, a marker of active collagen building — not the 50 mg many products contain, which carries its own problems. Copper is needed only in trace amounts most people get from food.
  • Three things degrade collagen faster than age does. UV activates matrix metalloproteinases that chew up existing collagen while suppressing new production via the TGF-β/SMAD pathway — and the damage continues for hours after you leave the sun. Glycation from high blood sugar caramelises collagen fibres. And cortisol shuts down collagen genes while triggering active breakdown through autophagy and the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway.

  • The placebo effect here is physiological, not imaginary. Positive expectation has been shown to raise blood flow to the skin by as much as 15%, which means more nutrient delivery to fibroblasts — plausibly more than the supplement itself contributes.
  • Dr. Lin does take collagen, which is the honest position rather than a contradiction. She adds an inexpensive, third-party tested powder with the right peptide sequences to bone broth, treating it as an inexpensive addition to a working routine rather than the thing doing the work.
