VO2 Max Testing

Cardiorespiratory fitness is strongly associated with health and mortality outcomes. VO2 max testing can characterize fitness when protocol, effort, and clinical context are considered together.

The Science

What This Test Measures

VO2 max measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body can utilize during intense exercise. It is an important measure of cardiorespiratory fitness, but no single ranking applies across every population, health question, or testing method.

A metabolic exercise test may identify VT1 and VT2 as protocol-dependent ventilatory estimates related to metabolic transitions. Their detection depends on the exercise protocol, measured gas exchange, and interpreter. VT2 is not interchangeable with lactate threshold, which requires its own definition and measurement approach.

These estimates can inform broad training-intensity ranges, but they do not produce universal zones or guarantee a particular improvement. Reassessment is most useful under comparable conditions and alongside symptoms, effort, and training history.
